CELEBRATE HISTORY

Celebrate History this month at The Beverly.

SINNERS (2025)

In Ryan Coogler’s haunting Southern Gothic epic, Michael B. Jordan delivers a powerhouse dual performance as Smoke and Stack Moore — twin brothers and World War I veterans turned bootleggers — who return home to Mississippi to open a juke joint. But their dreams are soon eclipsed by a rising tide of supernatural evil, as vampires, Hoodoo, and buried trauma converge in a blood-soaked reckoning. Get tickets to see Sinners (2025)

MALCOLM X (1992)

One of the most electrifying heroes of the twentieth century receives an appropriately sweeping screen biopic, rich in both historical insight and propulsive cinematic style, courtesy of visionary director Spike Lee. Built around an extraordinary performance from Denzel Washington, Malcolm X draws on the iconic civil rights leader’s autobiography to trace his journey of empowerment, from a childhood riven by white-supremacist violence to a life of petty crime to his conversion to Islam and rebirth as a fearless fighter for Black liberation, whose courage and eloquence inspired oppressed communities the world over. Impeccably crafted by Lee and his closest creative collaborators, and buoyed by commanding performances from Angela Bassett, Delroy Lindo, Al Freeman Jr., and others, this is a passionate monument to a man whose life continues to serve as a model of principled resistance. SWEET SWEETBACK’S BAADASSSSS SONG (1971)

A landmark of Black and American independent cinema that would send shock waves through the culture, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song was Melvin Van Peebles’s second feature film, after he walked away from a contract with Columbia in order to make his next film on his own terms. Acting as producer, director, writer, composer, editor, and star, Van Peebles created the prototype for what Hollywood would eventually co-opt and make into the blaxploitation hero: a taciturn, perpetually blank-faced performer in a sex show, who, when he’s pushed too far by a pair of racist cops looking to frame him for a crime he didn’t commit, goes on the run through a lawless underground of bikers, revolutionaries, sex workers, and hippies in a kill-or-be-killed quest for liberation from white oppression. RICHARD PRYOR LIVE ON THE SUNSET STRIP (1982)

Richard Pryor’s epically hilarious show at none other than the Hollywood Palladium, fresh off a transformative trip to Africa and battling cocaine addiction. Older, wiser and funnier than ever, the venerable comic tells outrageous jokes and a number of moving stories about his personal past — including one about a life-changing trip to Africa. Pryor’s trenchant social commentary touches on an array of subjects, from prison and mobsters to hospitals and cocaine. Filmed by legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler, this laugh riot captures all the comedy brilliance from one of the world’s funniest men ever. NATCHEZ (2025)

Natchez captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town; a layered mosaic of people contending with the weight of the past in a place where it is always present.Equal parts amusing and disturbing, we journey through an antebellum tourist destination at a crossroads as it grapples with a deeply troubled history that is so thoroughly ingrained in its present, we’re left to wonder if it’s actually past at all.
